Free returns is the benefit people assume covers everything and it does not. It applies to eligible items under conditions, and the conditions include the reason for the return and who sold the item. The terms for your order are printed on that order, not on a general page.

The part nobody says out loud. Free returns is not a property of the membership. It is a property of the order, and the order states it.
Two things decide it. The item, because some categories and oversized goods carry different rules, and the seller, because a partner shipment follows that seller’s return terms rather than Amazon’s.
So the phrase to look for is not "free returns" in general. It is "free returns on this order", in the returns section of the order you are actually holding.
Why the reason for the return matters
- A defect or a wrong item is usually covered, since the fault is not yours.
- A change of mind is usually covered on eligible items, but not universally.
- Third party items follow the seller’s policy, which can differ from Amazon’s.
- Oversized goods can carry their own pickup or fee rules.
The reason you select on the returns form is not paperwork. It routes the return down one rule set or another, which is why the same item can be free to return one way and not another.
Windows, and what to check before you buy
Return windows differ by category, and the window that applies is shown on the item page and again after purchase. Amazon sets it, and it is often longer over the holidays, which is worth knowing if you are buying gifts early.
