They sound like one feature and they are two. Overnight means tomorrow. Same day means today. Both are coverage based, so both depend on your address, and same day carries the tighter clock because it has less room to work with.

The real difference between them
The part marketing skips. Same day is not a better overnight. It is a different promise with a shorter leash.
Overnight gives the network a full night. Same day gives it the rest of today, which is why same day depends so heavily on the cutoff and on an item already sitting close to you.
One is a promise about tomorrow morning. The other is a promise about this evening, made on a shorter leash. That is the whole distinction, and it explains why same day is the one that disappears first.

Speed is not the goal. Fit is. Reaching for same day when tomorrow morning works just adds a cutoff you can miss.
What blocks both
Coverage, item eligibility, and the clock. If your address sits outside a tier, the item page says so plainly. If the item is oversized or sold by a partner without the same network, the fast tiers may not appear at all.
The honest read is on the checkout screen. Amazon shows you which tiers apply to that basket and that address, and that view is the only one that binds. Everything else is a generalisation, and generalisations do not arrive on your porch.
Buy it if at least one of the two tiers reaches your address on the things you order.
Skip it if you assumed speed was universal. Two tiers, two clocks, two coverage maps, and no guarantee that either is yours.
