How Gifting a Prime Membership Works
Gifting Prime is a purchase, not a setting. You buy a membership for someone else, choose a period at checkout, and the recipient ends up with a membership they control. You are the buyer, not the administrator. That single fact clears up most of the confusion around the gift.

What you actually buy
A Prime membership applied to another person. The period and the way the gift reaches them are shown when you buy, and the terms at that moment are the terms that apply. Read them at purchase, because they are fixed by the purchase.
What you are not buying is a management role. Once the gift lands, the membership is theirs to use, renew, or let lapse, on Amazon’s terms rather than yours.
What the recipient gets
The full Prime membership, not a trial version and not a coupon. Delivery, streaming, reading, and the household-side benefits all behave as they do for any member. A gift opens the same door a paid plan does.
That also means the welcome is unglamorous, in the best way. There is no bonus at the end, just benefits that start. What the membership is worth to them is the ordinary question, the one whether Prime is worth it answers.
What a gift cannot do
It cannot hand someone access to your account, and it does not create a Household. Those are different mechanisms with different owners. A gift is cleanly theirs. Shared access is cleanly yours.
So choose the mechanism by the relationship and the intent. A present is a gift. A partner on the same plan is a Household. Reading those two as the same thing is the most common mistake here.
Buy it if a membership is the right present and you are happy for the recipient to own it outright.
Skip it if you only want to share your own plan. That is a Household, not a gift.
