The overlap test
Worth naming plainly. Overlap is not extra service. It is a fee paid twice for the same relief.
- Different jobs: one covers grocery and fuel, the other covers shipping, streaming, and storage.
- Same job twice: both are mainly delivering the same kinds of orders to the same door.
- The test question: what would I lose by cancelling each one.
If the answer to that question is the same for both, one of them is redundant. Overlap is not extra service. It is a duplicated fee with a reassuring name.
When both make sense
When the two habits are genuinely separate. A household that does a weekly store run for groceries and fuel, and also orders a steady stream of non grocery items, is running two real patterns. Two memberships can each pay for themselves there.
Run the numbers rather than the vibes. Each membership should clear its own bar. For the Prime side, that bar is the break even calculation on your order volume, plus whatever the bundle replaces.
When one is enough
When your shopping is dominantly one pattern and the second membership is covering the leftovers. That is the common case, and it is where people pay a second fee for a habit they do not have.
The honest habit is a yearly audit, not a decision made once. Pull up both accounts, check last month’s usage, and cancel the one that is decorating the card. Retailers publish their own current terms, and your own order history is the tiebreaker.
Buy it if the two memberships cover genuinely different habits and each earns its own cost.
