The accepted list is Amazon’s to set, and the place it is authoritative is the screen where you enter a method. Cards and store credit instruments come and go from that list, so the only version worth acting on is the one in front of you at sign-up.

Where the list actually lives
Two places show what you can use: your account’s payment settings, and the method step of the membership sign-up. Both reflect the current state of your account, which a general article cannot.
That is why we do not print a fixed list here. A list copied from a page like this one is out of date the moment Amazon changes its rules, and a stale list is worse than no list.
Here is the part nobody says out loud. A list is not a policy. The checkout is the policy, and it speaks to you directly.
Why the method on file matters
- Renewal. The Prime membership bills to the method on file at your billing date.
- Continuity. A failed charge can interrupt the membership, and the benefits stop with it.
- Your purchases. Ordinary orders bill to the same pool of methods, which is a separate thing from the membership fee.
So the practical habit is simple. Before your billing date, look at the method on file and make sure it is still valid. An expired card is the least dramatic way to lose a membership.
The gift card question, answered honestly
People ask whether a balance can cover the membership. Gift balances are built for purchases, and membership billing runs through the payment methods on your account. Whether a particular balance applies at checkout is decided by Amazon and shown there.

Buy it if you have a valid method on file and you will keep it current through your billing date.
Skip it if you are counting on a method the account does not currently accept. Check the screen before the date, not after.
