Setting them before an event
Two things worth setting. An alert for the event itself, so you hear when the window opens. And alerts on the specific items you were going to buy, so a genuine drop reaches you rather than a general one. Specific beats broad, because a broad alert is noise.
Set them in the quiet week before, not the hour it starts. The event days are exactly when everything is busiest, and a plan made in advance is the one that survives.
