Annual and monthly are not two memberships. They are two billing plans for the same one. Switching is a timing decision, not a benefits decision, because nothing about what you get changes when the plan changes. What changes is how often you pay and how soon you can stop.

What actually changes
Only the billing rhythm. The Prime membership delivers the same benefits on either plan. Annual prices the effective month lower in exchange for a year of commitment. Monthly charges more per cycle in exchange for the freedom to stop sooner.
So a downgrade is really a purchase of flexibility. You are not getting a smaller membership. You are choosing a shorter leash on the cost.
The timing is the whole trick
A plan change lands inside Amazon’s billing cycle, so the renewal date decides when it takes effect and whether any part of the current period is affected. The screen where you make the change states the result, and that statement is the one to believe.

What to check before you switch
Two questions. How long do you actually intend to keep the membership, and does the annual price still earn its keep at the standard rate. If you are near certain you will keep it, annual is the calmer plan. If you are testing, monthly is the honest one.
If the real question is whether the membership is worth keeping at all, that comes first, and whether Prime is worth it answers it. Changing the plan you are leaving still leaves the plan.
Buy it if you want the membership but a shorter commitment, and you know your renewal date.
Skip it if you are switching plans to avoid deciding whether to keep it. Monthly is not an exit. It is a smaller door.
