What the fee depends on
The part nobody says out loud. A fee is not a fixed fact. It is the output of four choices, and you control three of them.
- Basket size, since larger orders often carry lower or no delivery fee.
- Time slot, because busy windows can cost more than quiet ones.
- Your area, since the service runs only where it runs.
- Your membership, which sets your starting terms in that area.
Four variables is the whole reason nobody can quote you a fee from a page. The cart quotes it for your basket, and that is the figure that matters.
The minimum basket lever
The most useful lever is basket size. Meeting the minimum the service sets for your area often removes or reduces the fee, which means the minimum is not a barrier so much as a pricing tier. Order above it and the delivery economics change.
That is worth knowing before you decide the fee is too high, because a slightly larger shop can turn a fee into no fee. Adding an item you will use anyway to clear a delivery minimum is the rare case where a minimum genuinely pays.
Fee plus minimum, read together
Between the minimum order and the fee, grocery delivery has two gates rather than one. Clear both on a basket you would have bought anyway, and the benefit is clean. Clear them by adding items you did not need, and you have paid for the privilege of a delivery.

Skip it if your basket is small and the fee lands anyway. A delivery fee on a basket that did not need delivery is a luxury, not a saving.
