Exchanging Instead of Refunding
An exchange keeps the purchase alive by swapping the item, rather than ending it with a refund. Where it is offered, it is often the faster route, because you skip the step of waiting for money and then ordering again. It fits the case where you wanted the thing all along and got the wrong version of it.

Exchange versus refund
A refund returns your money and closes the order. An exchange sends a replacement and keeps the order open. One ends the relationship with the item. The other repairs it. For a wrong size or a damaged arrival, repairing is usually what you actually wanted.
Whether an exchange is available is shown when you start the return, and it depends on the item and the stock. The generous route is not offered on everything, which is why it is checked rather than assumed.
When an exchange wins
Three cases. The item arrived damaged and you still want it. The size or colour was wrong and the right one would do. And the item is one you would immediately reorder, so the swap saves the gap. If you would buy it again today, an exchange is the same purchase without the wait.
It loses when the item disappointed you rather than fit you badly. In that case a refund is honest, and reordering the same thing would be a mistake twice.
The timing to expect
An exchange still runs on Amazon’s terms, so the replacement follows the same return process and its own timeline, shown on the return. It is faster than refund then reorder, not instant. What happens to the original item is stated when you choose the exchange.
If the item was oversized, the log to check is returning large items. And if the return is the wider question, the return window page covers the date that starts it all.
Buy it if you order things where a fit or a fault is possible, so a swap beats a refund.
Skip it if you would not reorder the item anyway. An exchange on something you did not want is just a slower return.
