What an Echo actually is
A speaker or display that runs the assistant. It is hardware in the same family as the rest of Amazon’s devices, with its own price and lineup. Owning one is what turns the assistant from a feature into a habit.

What the membership changes
On a compatible device, Prime unlocks the fuller assistant, which is the Alexa+ inclusion. The device stays the same. The assistant gets better. Nothing about the hardware changes when the plan does.
If you are choosing a device, the deciding question is not which one is best in the abstract. It is which one you will actually speak to, in the room you actually spend time in. The best device is the one within reach of your voice.
Choosing one, honestly
Three quick filters. Does it fit the room you will use it in. Does it do the things you will ask, like music, timers, or lights. And do you want a display, which adds a screen and a cost with it.
Beyond that, the device is a preference rather than a Prime decision. If you have no interest in the assistant, the honest move is to skip the device entirely and judge the membership on streaming or on delivery, which is where most of its value actually sits.
Buy it if a device is genuinely going to live in your routine and the fuller assistant helps.
Skip it if you would be buying hardware to justify a perk. A device you will not talk to is a decoration.
